A “Mouchoir” fan, an example of the scarce fans with leaf shaped as a square, like a handkerchief, the leaf of cream paper painted with a smiling monkey, clinging to bars, facing and pointing at a well-dressed gentleman in early 20th century suit and tails, wearing a monocle, who is clearly laughing at the monkey in his cage, both believing they are better than the other, the verse, by a known poet, in Italian, translating as the monkey telling the gentleman that without his fancy clothes, naked, he would be no better than him!
