Marcel Pinas Suriname (b 1971), Green, a collection of symbols, ideograms and decorations reflecting Surinamese Maroon culture, oil on canvas, signed to lower right, 150cm x 85cm
Marcel Pinas was born in the district of Marowijne and around 1987 went on to study at the Nola Hatterman Institute. During this time the Suriname Guerilla War raged and the Maroon culture was all but wiped out. In 1997, Marcel Pinas was given a government scholarship to continue his studies at the Edna Manley College of Visual and Performing Arts in Jamaica. This opened his eyes to real purpose of his art - to give 'his people' and their cultural a voice through his work. This awakening drastically , changed his work of which these two canvases are examples, his work is reminiscent of other Latin American and Cuban artists, including Jean-Michael Basquiat.
