“Tatters, Nov 1884”: A charming large late 19th century silk-leafed fan, the bone monture painted a soft turquoise, the central cartouche painted with a seated long-haired terrier, with coal-black nose and expressive eyes, the side vignettes demonstrating his prowess as a hunter, a store of rabbits awaiting the pot, and rats hanging by their tails, the verso painted with a lady in white, perhaps a bride, leaning from a stone window, to pick a rose from a climbing shrub, together with a musician and friends, two white doves to the side, guard approx. 35 cm; together with a slightly earlier fan with pink mother of pearl monture, cream silk leaf painted in pastels with a spray of dog roses, the verso with similar, guard approx. 29 cm (2)
Rubbing to the paint on the first fan’s monture, splitting to some folds, but generally holding, light liquid stains to the side of the leaf, some wear to the silk on the bottom left border, monture sound. The MOP fan has repairs to the monture at both shoulders, the lower guard with repairs on the upper section, and several gorge sticks also show repairs. The leaf to the recto remains clean and shiny, with slight wear to the bottom left border, and stains are noted on the verso, bottom right and on the lower guard.
